7-8C have had a busy year so far exploring a variety of topics in Maths, Science, English and HASS. They have looked at the cultural significance of Vikings in depth and demonstrated their understanding of their daily life, exploration and battles through a variety of creative activities. In English they have completed narratives and have just submitted their latest assignment on Information Reports. To enhance their skills in English, the students have been perfecting their paragraph structure and also studying the Greek/Latin word origins to help with their vocabulary. In the second half of the year we will be looking at language devices and studying Landforms in Geography.
This term in Kinder we have been exploring measurement. We have learnt how to describe items using words such as big, small, long, tall, and short. We have compared the size of items through activities such as finding items in our classroom bigger than our shoe and smaller than our shoe. We have put items in order from shortest to longest and from shortest to tallest. We have started using informal units of measurement (such as blocks and unifix cubes) to measure dinosaurs, our feet, and even ourselves! Here are some photos of us engaged in our learning.
In 3-4C for English we have been writing diamante poems about winter. In Maths we have learnt about maps and how to read and use coordinates and the importance of a key and a compass on maps. We watched a youtube clip and created these landscape pictures. We used up some pop sticks and made these little boxes with a lid. For Science we are learning about plants and their life cycles. We created this artwork with Mrs Oates. In HASS we are studying the first Tasmanians, the Palawa people, and how they lived and used and respected the land, sea and animals for survival.
We are conscious that many families are having to access before school care, and even vacation care, in Launceston due to the lack of options in our community. We are also conscious that some families are working less hours due to the needs that their family has with available care. Through some ongoing negotiation we have been able to get an in-principle agreement from Adventure Patch to explore the feasibility of a service occurring at the school both before the school day, on a similar basis as the after school care but also for vacation care on days during the holidays.
For this to become a reality we need people to complete the survey on the link below so that we can put a business proposal to the company and hopefully start looking for staff to undertake these sessions. Please make this a priority if you wish to access such a service.
If you have any questions please contact the school.
We are past half-way in the term and on reflection have achieved many things for, and with, our students. We had a highly successful Science Week, and we are very hopeful of an awesome day on Thursday as a culmination of our Book Week celebrations, including our parade.
All of these activities take a significant amount of time, effort and dedication to organise and conduct. Through the commitment of staff, often in their own time, we are able to ensure that students can access and participate in meaningful opportunities – often making memories that last a lifetime. We are also conscious of the effort parents make in preparing students for not just special events but more generally for each day of learning.
Ensuring that students have had a good night’s sleep, a suitable breakfast, that they are in uniform and are punctual are all things that we appreciate as it gives our learners the best opportunity to be ready to learn. We also are working as a staff team to ensure that we are consistent in our language and expectations, with and for students, so that they are as regulated as possible for all the challenges that each day provides.
When students aren’t quite in the right mind set or one of their needs hasn’t been fully met, we make every effort to help students recognise this by giving reminders. This is done in a calm and respectful way. In some instances, we provide access to reset strategies to enable students to get themselves back into a position to be an active learner.
We know that by practising these dispositions and behaviours that students will enhance their self-control and are much more likely to be successful into the future with work, relationships and further learning. The fundamental quality in all these situations is acting respectfully towards others. Especially when we are disagreeing with others getting angry is far less productive than being respectful and ensuring that you get your point across.
We have a few more upcoming events with the NE Cup hopefully happening on Friday, weather dependent and our K-2 Cross Country on Monday. We are really keen to have our younger students have this opportunity after we had to postpone earlier in the year. We have students participating in the Maths Relay and also have a number of our high school students put up their hand to represent us at the after school basketball competition on Thursday afternoons.
We also have been able to support students trialling future study options, particularly in the Vet sector, both at Lilydale and in other northern extension schools. On Tuesday we had almost 20 students visit to look at our Agriculture and Horticulture programs. We are very hopeful of having them enrol with us to pursue their learning pathway beyond year 10.

School Association - Notice of Next Meeting
Our School Association meets on the second Monday of each month in the Kinder space. Their next meeting will be Monday, 13 September at 7pm. We would love to see more people at the meetings and invite you to attend.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us. To get an understanding of how students across Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in Years 4-12 will be taking part in a wellbeing survey. The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Surveys will be undertaken during the week beginning 23rd August.
The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way. A letter with more information has been sent home with all students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact your child’s Class Teacher, or Jeanette Papageorgiou (Assistant Principal).
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
Career Information Day - Years 7-13
Tuesday August 10 Lilydale District School hosted a career information morning for the Years 7-13 students. Students and staff listened to guest speakers reflect on their careers and working life, the role of education, completing courses and the various paths life can take. After a break we headed to the PAC for an expo where industry and education groups set up booths for students to rove around and ask questions. This proved very beneficial with many students asking direct questions about career choice and education paths to consider. We had a wide variety of industries including the armed forces, police, forestry and agriculture. Agriculture/Horticulture was our main focus for the Year 11-13 students who are studying VET Agriculture/Horticulture certificates. The engagement of students was excellent. Some students were interviewed by ABC radio for the rural segment and spoke really well about their education in Agriculture. Thank you to everyone who helped make the morning a wonderful event.
Here are some feedback notes from stall holders, staff, students and a parent. Last year I took away the feedback to make 2021 even better.

Covid Update - Check In Tas App
Following on from a direction from the Tasmanian Government, we now have some changed arrangements in place for parents and carers when visiting schools.
You will now need to check in using the Check-in TAS app when entering school buildings; this includes classrooms, the office or the canteen.
Students are also NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.
For more information, visit www.checkin.tas.gov.au
