When you walk into a classroom at Lilydale during a Maths lesson, you will see a range of activities taking place. Students use objects such as blocks, number lines and charts to develop their understandings of concepts. As their knowledge and understanding develops through repeated practice, they begin to use more abstract representations such as digits and symbols. For example, a student would learn multiplication by repeatedly adding the same number of objects, then making ‘groups of’ with blocks or counters before moving onto the written form such as 3 groups of 4 or 3 x 4.
Here are some photos of our Kindergarten students using objects to develop their understandings of number and pattern.
The earth literally shook with seismic activities on Wednesday the 23rd ofJune at Lilydale District School. This high impact event was as a result of Australian National University (ANU) Seismologist Dr Sima Mousavi’s visit on her whirlwind tour of Tasmania. Long after she’s gone, the aftershocks are still being felt by students, staff, and the community.
As a host of one of the four seismometer under the Australian Seismometers in School Networks in Tasmania, Lilydale District School students and staff were “all hands on deck” in the workshop, generating shock waves and examining and studying it’s effect and propagation.
Participants were transfixed by Dr. Mousavi’s dynamic and inspiring presentation and this has generated such a buzz in our community. As students analysed the data generated by the LDS Seismometer being a part of a global network, it highlighted our schools place and contributions to the understanding and mitigation of natural disasters.
In the words of Brydee (Year 10) “It was such an informative session. Great to see an expert in the field come to talk to us”. Sarah (Year 9) “I now have such an improved awareness of the impact of earthquakes and Natural disasters”. Lauchlan (Year 9) “It is clear to me, I know what I will study at Uni”.
Teaming up with Australian National University (ANU), working hands on to explore cutting-edge, life-saving developments in a field of science was a highlight of an exciting term and indeed a sign of good things to come in the Science Learning Area at Lilydale District School.
We have had a busy start to the term with staff undertaking a day of Professional Learning last Monday, furthering our whole school focus on teaching pedagogy and our Berry Street priority. Currently we are looking at how we can continue to assist our students to build their learning stamina; to improve their abilities to concentrate for longer, stay on task and improve their learning output.
We have been pleased with the way that students have settled back into their learning routines and classroom environment, on the whole. It has been rewarding to see our work with from earlier in the year enabling students to demonstrate greater self-management and for them to prioritise their learning.
Whilst the weather wasn’t the best our 5-6 sports teams did an excellent job at South George Town last Friday. As you can see from the pictures on our Facebook page there was significant fun and sportsmanship on display. Thank you also to our senior student leaders for their support and maturity in their roles.
Yesterday we celebrate as a school, presenting certificates to students at our Principal’s Awards Assembly. The DoE and school values of Respect, Courage, Aspiration and Growth were all recognised. We also celebrated the successful houses from the Cross Country carnival and acknowledged those students who have been making positive contributions in their respective roles in North East Cup sporting events.
The PAC was the centre for Lego creations yesterday. Thank you to all those students and families who supported the event. It was great to see the creative side of some of our students, and staff, as well as allowing our junior students the opportunity to be involved in the voting process. Well done to everyone who had the courage to put an entry in.
Whilst the winter months always provide a challenge with washing and drying clothes, we would appreciate a concerted effort from families to ensure that students are in school uniform. There are numerous club and brand name hoodies being worn. Currently we have a large pile of “lost” property outside our office, so if students are missing items please get them to check. If there are issues with access to uniform please contact your sector leader.
During the next two weeks we will have our Growing Up program running in the Primary classes and parents of students will have received correspondence directly about the program, its aims and the content to be covered. This program is provided by an expert, external company and is critical to the ongoing developmental understanding for our students. Should the program raise any issues for your child please contact your classroom teacher in the first instance.
Over the next week we are conducting our parent teacher conversations, following on from reports issued at the end of Term 2. If you haven’t already booked a time and need to please follow the process outlined in the reporting letter or contact the office for further advice. These conversations are another critical way that we can enhance the partnership that the school has with you and your child. We look forward to productive discussions and further growth for all our learners across the remainder of the year.

LiFT (Learning in Families Together) News
Our new LiFT space is almost complete. What do you think of the changes? We hope you like them as much as the students. This space will become a multi-use space for both students and families.
The new space is going to be utilised in a new way on a Monday afternoons. Students from Prep to Year 2, along with leaders, volunteers and staff, will provide and support with playing games. These games can be adapted by teachers for learning other skills, such as reading and maths.
The ideas behind these games are to teach basic skills such as:
- Taking turns
- Sharing/dealing out cards
- Winning and losing
- Communication
- Following rules
- How and who starts the game
- Having fun
Our 5-6 Peer Leaders are also part of this team and during these sessions will be:
- Developing leadership skills
- Developing communication skills
- Becoming positive role models
- Having fun
During the term students will become familiar and confident playing these games and the aim is to share some of the skills they have learnt with their families at home.
If you would like to volunteer some of your time in the LiFT space, please contact the school office on 6395 0100 or speak directly to Janina Gilmartin.
Keep an eye out! There is more to come.
We look forward to sharing the learning through fun with you.
Covid Update - Check In Tas App
Welcome back for Term 3. Following on from a direction from the Tasmanian Government, we now have some changed arrangements in place for parents and carers when visiting schools.
You will now need to check in using the Check-in TAS app when entering school buildings; this includes classrooms, the office or the canteen.
Students are also NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.

UNIFORM STORE
Please note the Uniform Shop will be open for purchasing every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00-4:00pm. Please access the Uniform Store via the School Office.
If you are unable to make it during this time, you can send an order form
to the office with your child.
Alternatively you can phone the school office to order and pay over the phone with a credit card. The item/s can then be passed on to your child to take home.
Thank you
1-2 Excursion to Franklin House
Towards the end of Term 2 all the 1-2 Classes visited Franklin House in Launceston. The students were able to explore ‘how things/technology have changed over time’ through practical re-enactments and questioning. The students were highly engaged throughout the entire day and really enjoyed the olden day games they were able to play during their break times.
We would like to send a special thanks to the Franklin House organisers, the lovely ladies who guided us through the house and answered all our questions were very knowledgeable and made our day very enjoyable and educational. We would also like to send a huge thank you to all our parent helpers, their support on the day made things run very smoothly and it was very much appreciated by all staff and students.
