Congratulations to our Year 12 student, Bradley Boon, who has reached the finals of VET in Schools Student of the Year. He had to complete an application form which went before a panel of judges, attend an interview and now await the results, decided by the end of September.
Bradley completed Certificate II in Agriculture in 2020, Certificate II in Horticulture in 2021 and is currently working towards Certificate III in Agriculture. He has attended two work placements, including one with a fencing contractor. Bradley studies at Launceston College and will gain his TCE by the end of this year. His work on learning Mandarin was of special interest to the judges and how it might display in his future within the Agriculture Industry.
3-4 A have been learning about living things. We have studied food chains and life-cycles as well as investigating the many benefits of trees.
We read The Gentle Genius of Trees, which told us about what trees need to grow and how they help each other by sending nutrients through their roots to neighbouring trees. The message from the book helped us think about our own lives. The text talked about being strong, yet flexible and that we should help each other in the same way elements in nature look after each other. Here are some reading responses from the book.
“Shade (from adult trees) helps young trees because they need to grow slowly to get a strong trunk.’ Hollie
“The message from the text is saying when things get tough, find the flexibility in your brain to help you and keep calm.” Storm
“The author is meaning to grow in kindness” Kiara
We also created crayon and ink art-pieces of flowers.
It has been interesting listening to all the stories of athletes, not just from Australia, but across the world from the Paralympics over the last two weeks. The obvious common theme is overcoming adversity, but more importantly the desire to improve and the ongoing commitment and dedication that these athletes are prioritising to achieve their goals.
For our students there are significant lessons that can be learnt here through the experiences of others. Firstly you need to identify a goal and make a decision to get better. Having a positive but realistic view about what your goals may be, is always helpful. From there it is about maintaining your effort and focus on the steps required along the way.
Sharing these goals with others, however big or small, increases accountability and helps to stay on track. Having others giving you reminders and assistance is also another way to make the most of the opportunities that are presented. This is particularly true with learning goals.
We have been continuing our focus on respectful behaviours across the school. Often as we get further into the term, people’s tolerance and resilience decrease which can lead to conflict. We are working with all our students to ensure they have the skills needed to assist them to deal respectfully with each other and also with staff.
We have a big day on Friday with our 5/6 students hopefully being able to participate in their last round of sport. Weather permitting we trust that all our students get another opportunity to demonstrate their sportsmanship and team play irrespective of the sport they are playing.
We will also be hosting some teams from Scottsdale High School who are participating with us in the Write A Book In a Day competition (WABIAD). In teams of 8-10 students will be starting at 8am and developing ideas and storylines, creating the text and illustrations and publishing a book before the cut off time of 8pm. They will have access to a variety of technology including laptops, cameras and a photocopier/scanner so that they can incorporate a range of material. This is a fantastic co-operative learning activity and one which will hopefully inspire students not just on the day but into their future.
Thank you to all our visitors for your consistent approach to checking in and using the QR codes around the school. We are very conscious of the need to stay in good habits so that we can manage any future scenarios in a prompt and controlled way. Our students are great ambassadors in this space, routinely washing and sanitising when they enter different spaces.
A big thank you to all those families who are supporting us in a variety of ways to ensure the best outcomes for students. Having more students in uniform, arriving punctually to school and being ready to learn are some examples of the improvement we have seen over recent weeks.
Please use the survey monkey link and complete the survey around Out of School Hours Care so that we can advocate for you to increase options for families around the challenges of work and school. We are hopeful that there is enough support to increase services and assist our community.

On Wednesday 1st September, Kinder held its annual Father's Day Breakfast. We were lucky enough to have 20 Dads/Pops/Grandads come and share breakfast with the Kinder children, and have a look around our classroom. Breakfast was followed by a play outside in the sunshine. Here are some photos of the Kinders enjoying spending time with their special people for Father's Day.
NE Cup Football
Another season of NE Cup is over for our football team. Whilst we did not have many wins this season we were competitive throughout just losing quite a few games by under 2 goals. During term 2 our best player was Broady, Jonty best team player and Gibson won the encouragement award.
For term 3 Jonty won best player, Brock won best team player and Joshua won the encouragement award.
We had a core group of key players who were in our best every game. This included Dominic, Liam, Arthur, Joss, Jonty and Broady.
It was pleasing to note the improvement and effort from our younger players, eg. Joshua, Jake, Seth and Brock. We are looking forward to coaching our new look team in the NE Cup in 2022.
NE Cup Netball
What a year for netball! We had 4 teams in the NE Cup this year, all at various levels. Our 3 Div 3 teams participated well each time and always gave it their best and learnt many new skills throughout the season. These 3 teams always laughed and enjoyed their games, encouraged and supported each other.
Our Div 2 team followed in the footsteps of last years amazing team and were undefeated all year! They girls displayed great sportsmanship and teamwork during each game. As our Year 10’s took to the court for the final time representing Lilydale they did it in a spectacular way- they came together in the second half and fought back to win their last ever game by 1 goal!
Well done to all girls, and to our Year 10’s thank you for your efforts in representing Lilydale District School over the last 4 years in netball at the NE Cup.
NE Cup Soccer
It was another fantastic season for our two North East Cup soccer teams this year. With the return of our coaches Mr Uko and Mr Robertson, we had a very competitive season, notching quite a number of wins. More importantly though, the effort and determination demonstrated by all of our players was absolutely phenomenal.
This year, we saw a number of the year 8 students step into leadership positions. Joe and Jack both commanded very competitive teams within each meet. A core group of Kobe, Steve, Kye, Jamie, Cody, Lachie, Kiara and Amalia were consistently going above and beyond to ensure that our teams were ready to go on the day.
Everybody involved showed tremendous sportsmanship, school spirit and always tried their best whenever competing on the field. They also showed great respect to the teachers and other students involved in the four days. With all of our soccer players showing great improvement both individually and collectively within their teams, us coaches are already looking forward to a successful 2022 North East Cup!
Recreation
The 7-8 Recreation class is now in full swing. The class this term has gone to Ten Pin Bowling, Skate and Sport and Airtime 360. Next term we may go to the Golf Driving Range, Laser Tag and Rock Climbing. Students have been very positive and enjoyed their excursions.
At school students have been doing ‘Sport Education’ where they run a roster for a couple of weeks, this includes a ladder, leading goal scorers and best player totals. So far, we have down netball and basketball. I am looking forward to the remainder of the year as students develop their team skills and experience recreation areas in Launceston.
We are conscious that many families are having to access before school care, and even vacation care, in Launceston due to the lack of options in our community. We are also conscious that some families are working less hours due to the needs that their family has with available care. Through some ongoing negotiation we have been able to get an in-principle agreement from Adventure Patch to explore the feasibility of a service occurring at the school both before the school day, on a similar basis as the after school care but also for vacation care on days during the holidays.
For this to become a reality we need people to complete the survey on the link below so that we can put a business proposal to the company and hopefully start looking for staff to undertake these sessions. Please make this a priority if you wish to access such a service.
If you have any questions please contact the school.
We have a bit of a collection of lost property gathering out the back of the school office. If your child has misplaced an item or two, please get them to check it out.
We also have some jewellery accumulating over time, most jewellery items that are handed in are of little monetary value. However we have some items that would love to go home to their owners. Please check the photo and if you recognise any, please contact the school office for collection.
School Banking is a great way to practice regular savings
Remember, Thursday is School Banking day and students can bring in their weekly deposit.
Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you're saving a little or a lot. Remember, there is no minimum deposit with School Banking, you can send as little as 5c per week in, saving regularly is what is important.
For every deposit made at school, students will receive a Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a School Banking reward item.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
If your child has lost their book, please contact your School Banking Co-ordinator for a replacement or visit any Commonwealth Bank branch.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at <school name>. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2021 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the Commonwealth Bank School Banking website.
UNIFORM STORE
Please note the Uniform Shop will be open for purchasing every Tuesday afternoon from 3:00-4:00pm. Please access the Uniform Store via the School Office.
If you are unable to make it during this time, you can send an order form
to the office with your child.
Alternatively you can phone the school office to order and pay over the phone with a credit card. The item/s can then be passed on to your child to take home.
Thank you
Covid Update - Check In Tas App
Following on from a direction from the Tasmanian Government, we now have some changed arrangements in place for parents and carers when visiting schools.
You will now need to check in using the Check-in TAS app when entering school buildings; this includes classrooms, the office or the canteen.
Students are also NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.
