LIFT - Learning In Families Together
Hi, my name is Janina Gilmartin and I am the Learning in Families Together (LIFT) coordinator for Lilydale school.
Learning in Families Together (LIFT) is a new initiative that will build your confidence and skills to support your children's literacy and numeracy learning at home. It will encourage collaboration between home, school and the community to help lift the literacy and numeracy learning outcomes for all children.
This program is new to our school and we would love you to become involved! This might look like:
- Learning how to support your child/ren with literacy and numeracy through playing specific games and reading regularly with your child/ren
- Becoming a volunteer and helping in the classroom setting, in a small group or in the new LIFT space
- Supporting students in learning a specialty skill in an area of your own strength and interest, e.g. music, games, gardening, art etc.
- Coming in to, ‘be the expert’ and share your knowledge with a specific class or small group of interested participants.
If you are interested in being a part of one or more of the things listed above, then please contact me via the school office on: 6395 0100 and ask for Janina Gilmartin.
Working with Vulnerable People
We would really love some more volunteers. All volunteers in the school need to have a ‘Working with Vulnerable People’ check completed. I am happy to support anyone wanting to complete their ‘Working with Vulnerable People Check’.
Once completed, the check is valid for 3 years and can be used in a range of volunteer settings. The cost for 3 years is $19.44.
If you feel confident in completing this by yourself then copy the link below, where you can complete the process.
Apply for registration to work with vulnerable people (cbos.tas.gov.au)
We are specifically looking for volunteers to play games or read with children in the LIFT space on a Monday morning (8:40-9:00am and 2:30-3:00pm.
Recently, we had the opportunity to share our school-wide work on implementing the Berry Street Education Model with schools and department leaders around the state. We received great feedback around the strategies we have been embedding. Our focus so far has been on regulating and being ready to learn. At the start of every lesson, teachers and students use strategies to regulate the brain and body, including patterned activities, mindfulness exercises and using a ‘Ready to Learn Scale’. We’ve installed new reset tracks and swings to support students to reset, and set up a purpose-designed “Ready to Learn Room”, where small groups work together to further practice their regulation strategies. We encourage you to have conversations with your children around this, and to talk with your child’s teachers about ways to support this work at home. You are also welcome to chat with anyone from our Berry Street leadership team – Ms Jeanette Papageorgiou, Ms Tania McNear, Mrs Fiona Beament, and Ms Megan Vincent.
Our first North East Cup day was a great day for all, with students enjoying the opportunity to build connections across schools. This event is a part of our school program, and attendance and participation are an expectation for all. We had teams represented in netball, soccer and football. Thank you to our HPE staff for their hard work and organisation in making this day so successful.
This week, we begin NAPLAN testing for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. These tests provide a snapshot of student learning, which can assist teachers in informing their planning. They do not reflect all the qualities that we value in young people as individuals. Our values of ‘Courage’ and ‘Growth’ are a focus for this period – it is an opportunity for young people to do their best and to strengthen their resilience. A special thank you to Ms Heather Styles for all her work in setting us up for success with test scheduling, student adjustments and ICT requirements.
Finally, I would like to thank the school community for their support during my time as Acting Principal. I always enjoy the opportunity for growth, and to work with everyone in a slightly different way.
Jeanette Papagorgiou – Acting Principal

Ruby and Shanzel Brewer were valued students at our school who offered support and friendship to others.
In recognition of their time at Lilydale we have installed a customised friendship seat at the top of Matty’s Playground with designs that reflect the girls’ interests.
This is an ongoing memorial to them which we hope will help us promote kindness and support for others amongst our students.
Mother's Day Afternoon Tea in Kinder
On Thursday 6 May, the Kinder children invited their Mums/Grandmas/Nans to share Afternoon Tea with us for Mother's Day. Thank you to everyone who was able to come and celebrate with us - the children were very excited to show their special people around our classroom and playground, and to share some yummy food with them. Thank you to Mrs Street for making the delicious cake and scones, as well as organising the hot drinks. It was a lovely afternoon!

The Mother’s Day Stall was held on Tuesday the 4th of May and was wonderfully supported by staff and students. Tami and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped get the gifts ready for the stall and those that helped out on the day. We hope everyone had a wonderful day.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MAY – THE POWER OF PLASMA
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood are asking for support to find more plasma donors across Tasmania to make a difference in May. Lifeblood need more plasma than ever before - it can be a real game changer for many Australian patients suffering from kidney disease, cancer and rare blood disorders to name just a few of the ways plasma can be used to help. It takes 3 plasma donations to make one small vial of IVIg, used to treat patients with an immune disorder. These treatments may allow a patient to live the life they deserve, or to simply live.
You can help more people, more often by donating plasma. You can donate plasma every two weeks and it can be done as a first donation. It takes a bit longer to donate but you can take that extra time to relax!
Across May, Donor Centres in Burnie, Devonport, Hobart and Launceston have around 1000 plasma appointments that need donors. In fact, plasma donation is so important that some centres have special PLASMA ONLY sessions opening up in May.
Hobart Donor Centre, normally only open until 5pm most days, will be holding special late sessions for plasma only from 5pm to 745pm on 12th May, 26th May and 9th June. This could be a great opportunity for an after school group to donate! Launceston Donor Centre will also hold a special plasma only Sunday Funday in May, date to be confirmed.
So, why not be a Plasma Powerhouse and make an appointment to donate by downloading the DonateBlood APP, book online at:
or call 131495. Want to make a group booking for one of our special plasma sessions? Just call Ann Harvey at Lifeblood on 0419887365.
Remember to ask to be added to the Education Dept. TAS Lifeblood Team or your own school team. Want to start your own Lifeblood Team and encourage staff, students (over 18), parents and alumni to get on board? Just go to the website (via the link above or call 1300 886 524.
