100 Days of Learning Celebration

In our ever-connected world, understanding the past and present is crucial for shaping a better future. Through HASS in Years 7-8 and History in Years 9-10, students develop insights into global events and their impact. Currently, our Year 7-8 students are delving into Australia's natural resources, exploring how they shape our nation. Meanwhile, Year 9-10 students have been examining the Olympics, gaining a deeper appreciation of this global event's historical significance and cultural impact. These studies equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate our complex world thoughtfully and innovatively.

HERD NUMBERS ON THE INCREASE AT LILYDALE SCHOOL FARM
Spring 2024 calving has begun in earnest at the farm with a herd increase of three heifers so far. It was relief to have female calves to begin our calf drop this year, as the 2023 drop only produced one replacement heifer. It is the goal of our breeding program to replace our foundation females with Lilydale Murray Grey Stud home bred heifers bearing the Lilydale name.
The AI sires of calves were Rogialyn Jupiter N15 and Mount Major Peregrine P3.
The semen was generously donated to the school by Brett and Sarah from Mount Major Murray Greys, Victoria.
We are now awaiting the home bred two year old heifers to begin calving and hopefully the female run of calves will continue.
Having watched the recent Olympics, we need to make sure that we celebrate all successes not just gold medal achievements. Personal bests are fantastic in themselves! Having positive feedback for students and for staff is a really important feature of education. By setting small goals and achieving them students understand success and become more comfortable with it. Some of these successes, are not always academic and are equally important based upon individual’s circumstances. As “coaches”, teachers work really hard to identify opportunities and skills that they believe will best serve students moving forward. The other key component to success is attendance.
Our 5-6 sport representatives combined with their sports leaders, enjoyed a great first day of competition in George Town recently. We have several students who have been chosen as Country Gold representatives for Tamar Valley, in various sports who will compete against other regions towards the end of the term. Many thanks to our staff for organising and providing this opportunity as part of a larger organisation. Well done to all our all the students that trialled and put their best effort towards selection.
Our students continue to be excellent representatives for us in the broader community. Whenever we go on excursions, to sporting events or to more formal opportunities, their behaviour, manners and respect for others are of the highest standard. It is a real privilege to know that they continue to make great choices and build a great picture of our school across the region.
Now Launching into Learning programme continues to receive good support, with strong numbers attending weekly. This opportunity for children to engage with school and build routines is a great first step in terms of their introduction to school.
I want to thank those families that make direct contact with class teachers, senior staff or myself when things aren’t working the way we would expect or when there is information that is needed. This communication is invaluable when we have it and it allows us to adjust and cater for some of those situations in a more meaningful manner.
Safety is a paramount responsibility for us all. Please slow down through the school zone, particularly in our car parks and driveways. Recently there have been too many people in a hurry. Similarly please make sure that the drop off zone isn’t used as a car park as the bottleneck created causes further safety concerns for all.

Reading is Magic!
Year 9/10 visit to Launceston College Production ‘Bring it On’
On Thursday, 8 August our Year 9 and 10 students had the fantastic opportunity to watch Launceston College's production of Bring It On: The Musical. Inspired by the hit film, the musical dives into the challenges and rewards of taking risks and stepping out of your comfort zone. The story follows Campbell, who seems to have it all as the captain of Truman High School's cheerleading squad. But her world is turned upside down when she's unexpectedly redistricted to Jackson, an inner-city school. Through her journey, Campbell learns valuable lessons about friendship, deception, and the power of crossing the line.
A special shout-out to former Lilydale student Jaya, who shined in a main role, making us all proud. It was an exciting experience to see the themes we've been exploring in our 9/10 English classes come to life on stage. Our students were exceptional representatives of our school, showing great enthusiasm and respect throughout the performance. We can't wait for more opportunities like this to enrich our learning!

It has been a busy time for our Year 10 students and they start preparing for the next step in their educational journey. All students are required to enrol in Year 11 at Launceston College, Newstead College, Lilydale District School or one of the other extension school options. The colleges will be coming to Lilydale in the coming months to meet with students and complete the enrolment process. This includes students who are hoping to apply for a VET course. Students that are aiming for apprenticeships next year should have their resume and cover letter ready and be regularly checking online or talking to industries to find something available. They are also encouraged to organise work experience as many industries consider this a week long interview.
Several students have signed up to do White Cards, RSA’s and First Aid courses with the school and we remind students to get the paperwork back for these courses as soon as possible.
Year 10 students should have now completed their Transition Plan which indicates the college they plan to attend and the courses they would like to do. Parents can also request to have a copy of their child Transition plan sent to them as it gives an indication of what their child’s plans are for next year.
Both Newstead College and Launceston College have parent information sessions coming up which we encourage you to attend.
If students or parents have any questions or would like support with the transition process they are welcome to contact karin.denehy@decyp.tas.gov.au.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
Attention: Parents and Carers of students in Year 4-12.
Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey
The wellbeing of our students is important to us - we want to hear how students feel, and think, about different things going on in their lives.
Those in Years 4-12 at Lilydale District School will be taking part in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results from this survey will help us get a picture of the current wellbeing of our students, and what we can do to improve future wellbeing for learning. The more students who take part, the clearer our picture will be.
The Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey is part of the Department’s Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy .
The details for the survey are
When: 3/9/24 to 6/9/24
Who Years 4-12
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t need to do anything. The survey will be done in class time and will not require your child to prepare in any way.
A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4-12 students, including Frequently Asked Questions and a form to sign and return to the school if you do not want your child to participate in the survey.
If you would like further information, please contact the school on 6395 0100 and ask to speak with Isabel Garrett.
Thank you for supporting us to ensure that all our learners are safe, feel supported and are able to flourish, so they can engage in learning.
