Well with this year’s Agfest done and dusted it is time to reflect on and celebrate our success.

This year we saw an increased participation from both our Certificate II Ag and our High School students. A total of 18 students represented Lilydale District School in The Farmers Challenge, Junior Handlers and Beef Cattle Classes.

Perhaps the highlight of the four days was the Champion Herdsman awarded to Ashlea Harrison who exhibited skills and responsibility regarding maintaining the health and welfare of our cattle show team throughout the four days at Agfest site.

Day one saw our teams of students competing in Junior Farmers Challenge. All teams competed admirably missing out on the finals by the merest of margins.

The Junior Handlers competition on day two saw most of the students competing in the age classes. The experience of competition was new to many of the students however they acquitted themselves very well. This was reflected in the judge’s comments at the conclusion of each class.

The final day saw Lilydale Murray Stud win all ribbons in the Murray Grey breed classes as well as the Reserve Grand Champion Heifer.

Both the students and cattle were fantastic ambassadors Lilydale District School, drawing positive comments from the public, judges and Agfest organisers.

Moon & Sun Creations from 1-2A, 5-6 & 7-10 Students for a projection work to be displayed at the Winter Solstice Lantern Walk on Friday, 21 June at 5pm.

THNEADs inspired by the Dr Seuss story The Lorax - Students involved in these creations are invited to parade at the Winter Solstice Lantern Walk and at the final assembly for Term Two on Tuesday, 2 July.  Anyone interested can join us on Thursday at lunchtime in Art Room.

In Kinder this term we have been focusing on gaining meaning from texts by listening, discussing, drawing and verbally recounting the main events of stories that we read together.

After listening to the story of Chicken Licken, the Kinder students drew a picture of the main characters and recounted the events that happened in the story in their own words.  Students were encouraged to retell what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Here is some of our work.

Prep and the 1-2 classes have been enjoying creating art each week in Art lessons. Students have looked at the work of artists from the past to see how they made their artworks. We have used warm and cool colours, learnt about showing distance, and experimented with collage. Here are some photos of our budding artists hard at work.

A great day was had by all students and staff at TPSSA Cross Country last month (Friday, 21 May). All students ran exceptionally well and some fantastic individual results.

At Lilydale we use a framework of multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) to provide target learning opportunities across curriculum areas. As part of our planning process teachers meet regularly in grade or learning area teams to plan student learning opportunities linked to achievement standards in the Australian Curriculum. Each PLT follows a scope and sequence, planning, assessing, moderating and marking student work. As a group teachers regularly conduct learning check ins - mini tests - to ascertain student understanding of a particular subject or concept. This information also informs the effectiveness of current pedagogies and adjustments to teaching that may need to be made to ensure the right tone and pace of instruction is used to ensure all students achieve positive growth in learning.

Attendance

Current research indicates that one of the biggest impacts on student achievement is attendance. Regular attendance at school increases engagement with learning and actively supports students to participate in their learning. When students attend regularly they are more likely to: 

• keep up with daily lessons, missing school can make it hard to keep up.

• make and maintain social connections with teachers and peers.

• be present for the many opportunities that are on offer across a week

To support our students to attend regularly we:

• regularly monitor attendance and reach out to families if there are frequent absences.

• offer support and counselling services to help address some of the reasons for frequent absences.

School Association News

At the recent School Association meeting some potential additions to the school uniform were discussed.

• Sports singlets in  house colours for Maralinga and Corinna with or without names.
  
• School cap (K-6) to be worn Terms 2 and 3.

• School beanie.

Stop Press notices were sent out with every child in the school, but it would appear some families may not have received them.

This term, Year 10 Students have had the opportunity to participate in the Beacon Career Program. Thursday, 24th May our students were able to take part in two fantastic site visits. City of Launceston provided the students with horticulturalists, arborists, mechanical technicians, administrators and even the primate keeper to talk to at the beautiful City Park. They took the students on a tour around the park and pointed out the work they do behind the scenes which also included the feeding the area in the monkey enclosure.

Our second site visit was at Cromartys. At Cromartys, they showed the students the innovative technology and engineering ideas that help automate different industries, including the how water systems are managed. The coding and programs used to run conveyer belts, waste water systems and collaborative robots was particularly interesting to the students.

A big thank you to City of Launceston and Cromartys for inviting us on your site and to the Beacon Foundation for organising it all.

High School – Student of the Week

Every week all staff, Student Leaders and the wider community have the opportunity to nominate a high school student as a ‘Lilydale Legend’. These nominations acknowledge when another person has noticed the student demonstrating our school values of being safe, respectful and learning. If a student is nominated by multiple people their name will appear twice. Lilydale Legends for the week will get recognised in our high school assembly and receive a certificate. Congratulations to the Lilydale Legends for week 4 and 5.

Our School Association usually meets on the second Monday of each month in the Kinder space. Our next meeting will be on Monday, 5 August at 7:00pm. We would love to see more people at the meetings and invite you to attend.
