This year in 5-6C, we have been very busy this year!
In HASS we have been learning about Federation, as well as learning more about democracy and what that means in Australia. We have looked at how federation impacted the country and how Australia came to be. There has been a lot of work on creating 3D models of significant buildings of the time as well as biographies of significant Australians.
In Maths we have been learning about fractions, different types of angles, division and how to subtract and add decimals and fractions. We are working in groups to develop multiplicative thinking, and exploring area and perimeter.
In Science we have learnt about reversible and irreversible changes in solids liquids, gases as well as microorganisms. In some experiments we’ve explored the properties of solid, liquid and gasses as well as looking at changes in those materials. We are about to learn how to use the Makey Makey’s to demonstrate a deeper understanding about electricity.
In English we have been focussing on poetry and biographies using the features of different texts with a focus on picture books as well a persuasive texts, 100 word stories and creating narratives. We have explored figurative language, learning more about similes, metaphors and onomatopoeia.

Harlequin entered a winter poem in the City of Devonport Eisteddfod and received a bronze medal for her entry. Congratulations to Harlequin for writing the poem as an extra curricula activity and presenting her poem on stage.
In History this term the 9/10 students have been studying World War 2. Students have been creating artefacts such as birth certificates, journals, and letters from that time. They have been learning about why the war occurred and what we need to know to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Students have been studying the Holocaust as well as Australia’s role, including the bombing of Darwin. The Kokoda Track campaign has also been an interesting topic that the students have researched, with many never realising that the war got so close.

Last week our 5-6 Country Gold representatives participated in a scaled day carnival across a variety of sports – congratulations to all of the students who represented Lilydale with pride.
This week we have TPSSA Athletics for selected 3-6 students, Year 9-10 girls representing the school at a Gala Footy Day and our Year 10 students heading to Symmons Plains.
Schools are dynamic places, and we often have changes in staffing that reflect this. Miss Megan Vincent has accepted a transfer to Flinders Island District School commencing Term 4. Miss Vincent has been a valued member of the Lilydale school community and while we will miss her quiet determination and dedication, we wish her all the best for the next chapter in her life. In Term 4 Mrs Julie Breadmore will be stepping into the role of class teacher for Prep. Ms Kresta Davis will be transitioning back to work 1 day a week after a period of maternity leave. Ms Davis will work on Thursdays alongside Mr Brooks to deliver quality learning opportunities and outcomes for students.
Families would have received NAPLAN individual student reports for 2022. Early in Term 4 staff will spend time analysing and discuss these results and use them to inform future planning for student learning.

After a couple of failed attempts with the weather, 26 5-6 students attended the Country Gold trials on Friday, 19 August. It was a fantastic day with the students all participating well, and showing true sportsmanship and courage.
The students selected to attend the trials were: Charlee, Tully, Fiona, Madison, Olivia , Amberlie, Rielee, Daisy, Titus, Thea, Charli, Ava, Georgia, Cale, Callum, Hollie, Madeline, Louie, Rhys, Ruby, Yuma, Freya, Kaylyn, Indii, Holly and Xander. The following students were selected for the carnival which was held on Friday, 23 September.
Netball: Ava Hockey: Tully, Olivia, Freya, Kaylyn and Yuma
Football: Madison, Rielee and Cale
Soccer: Titus, Madeline and Thea.
From all reports, all 4 carnivals went very well. Well done to all of our students, and how well they participated!

The University of Tasmania visited the Year 9-10 students to discuss what they had to offer and how a university education may fit in the students' pathways. A small group of students then participated in an engineering challenge that required them to make a buoyant platform out of marshmallows and pasta. This platform had to be able to hold weights for a short amount of time. The students were very creative with their designs.
Thank you to Ira and Jack from the University of Tasmania for presenting to our students.
