Digital Communications
Lilydale District School is switching to using digital communications through Ed Smart. Ed Smart is a secure online platform used by schools across Australia. DECYP schools are currently using it for broadcast messages and student absence notifications.
We are switching to Ed Smart to make communicating with parent/carers easier and timelier. It will be used to send digital broadcasts or forms to collect information or permissions.
How it works:
- For a broadcast message, you will receive an SMS message or an email. These messages are general notices and do not need to be replied to.
- For Parent Slips, you will receive an SMS or email notification with a link to click. This opens to a secure web page where you can complete the form.
- Any data you submit in the forms is stored safely with Ed Smart and is only visible to authorised school staff.
Why are we switching?
- It makes it easier for families to receive and respond to forms.
- It helps reduce the number of paper forms we need to send home.
- Ed Smart helps reduce the time and effort required by staff to manage communications.
What else do I need to know?
- Communication from Ed Smart can only be sent to the primary parent/carer contact at this stage.
- If you are not the primary contact but would like to receive a copy of a form or provide consent individually, please contact the school office.
- If you would prefer a paper form, please contact the school office.
- If you need to update your mobile phone number or email address, please contact the school office.
We appreciate your support with this new communication method. If you have any questions or encounter any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Warm regards,
Karen Hay
Principal
In Term 3, students in 3-4B worked hard on writing information reports. Each student chose an animal they were interested in and researched facts about it. They learned how to write clear introductions, organise their ideas into paragraphs, and use topic-specific words. The final reports showed great effort and creativity. Well done, 3-4B!
Even the red foxes and axolotls would be impressed!

Year 10 History Students Explore the Stories Behind Stolen Treasures
Last term, our Year 10 History students were diving into the fascinating world of historical artifacts and colonial legacies through the ABC TV series Stuff the British Stole. The series explores the complex and often controversial journeys of cultural items taken during the British Empire’s expansion.
As part of their exam, students focused on four powerful episodes:
· The Crown Jewels – exploring symbols of imperial power and contested ownership.
· An Egyptian Mummy in Australia – raising questions about museum ethics and cultural repatriation.
· Rubber – uncovering the environmental and human cost of colonial exploitation.
· Matthinna – the heartbreaking story of an Aboriginal child removed from her community.
Students used Venn diagrams to compare and contrast the historical contexts, ethical issues, and cultural impacts of each artifact. They also developed and answered both open and closed questions, encouraging deeper thinking and discussion around ownership, identity, and justice.
This unit has helped students build critical thinking skills while engaging with real-world historical debates. It’s been a powerful reminder that history isn’t just about the past—it’s about how we understand and shape the present.

On Wednesday, 24th September we held a special assembly to farewell the Legendary Mr Christopher Deane.
We’d like to give a huge congratulations (and a big thank you) to Mr. Deane, our hardworking groundsman at Lilydale District School. After years of mowing, fixing, digging, and keeping everything in shape, it’s finally time for him to hang up the shovel, put his feet up, and swap wheelbarrows for quality time with his family and grandchildren. We’re sure he’ll enjoy having more time to watch the Hawks play footy—without having to race off to mow a lawn or fix a fence!
Thank you, Mr. Deane, for everything you’ve done for our school.
You’ve left big boots (and muddy footprints) to fill!

High School – Student of the Week
Every week, all staff, Student Leaders and the wider community have the opportunity to nominate a high school student as a ‘Lilydale Legend’. These nominations acknowledge when another person has noticed the student demonstrating our school values of being safe, respectful and learning. Being SunSmart in Tasmania means using sun protection when UV levels reach 3 and above, this occurs from September to April. From May to August, sun protection is not recommended unless near highly reflective surfaces such as snow or being outdoors for extended periods.
Therefore, this means implementing sun protection measures from the beginning of the school year until the end of April and again from the beginning of September until the end of the school year. Implementing sun protection measures throughout Terms 1 and 4 only is insufficient to protect against UV risks.
Students in Kinder to Year 6 will be required to wear SunSafe hats from 1st September through until the end of April 2026.
