The term is nearly over, the year is close to an end and 9-10A have been very busy with their work and getting ready for transitioning to either college or Year 10. Alongside our regular work and assignments, we look forward to time spent with our little Prep buddies.
Last week the Preps came to visit us in our classroom. Boy, was it a shock! They asked where we keep our toys, and if they had to learn all the spelling words on the board!
After trying to all fit in our classroom (40 kids in a room set up for 21), we completed some work we had been doing with them creating our ‘Buddy Town’. It was fun and they want to come up to the big kids’ area again soon.
It is going to be very hard and emotional leaving our prep buddies at the end of the year that’s for sure- tissues might be needed on the last day this year!
VET Horticulture students have been planting hazelnut trees at Lalla as part of the Plant trees and shrubs unit. We have helped plant over 250 trees.
It has been exceptionally pleasing to get this far through the year without COVID having a direct impact on us as a school. Unlike some other states, who have had to ask for the support of families to conduct learning at home, we have the distinct advantage of our learning community staying together and further strengthening our relationships.
What has also been pleasing this year, to date, is the development of our calm orderly learning environments. Knowing that our learners have been taught and had the opportunity to practise skills which assist them to be settled and present means that they are much better prepared at the beginning of the day for their learning. They can also reset and refocus their efforts should a challenge arise during the day. For some students, we are working individually to develop a personalised ready to learn plan whilst for others we are teaching skills in a large group setting, differentiating for the needs of learners.
Well done to everyone involved. A special thanks to our Berry Street team for their leadership and to staff for taking on this important challenge to review and adjust their practice for the betterment of our students. Our students also deserve credit for being open to new learning and for wanting to “Be Our Best”.
We have been able to secure another Youth Outreach Fun Day during the afternoon of the first Monday back in Term 4, Monday, 11 October from 3-4:30pm at the PAC. There will be a free BBQ and activities for youth and families with children, including service providers from the wider community. This is proudly supported by Northern Suburbs Community Centre, Communities for Children (Aus Gov - Dept of Social Services), PCYC, Lilydale District School and Tasmanian Government.
We have started collating results from our Before and After School Care survey. We are hopeful that there is sufficient information and commitment from the community to be able to increase our services in this much needed area for working families. Thanks to Ann Carter and Launceston Day Care for their organisation and support with this initiative.
Congratulations to all our representatives who participated in the Country Gold sports extravaganza last Thursday and Friday. We had great representation across the soccer, Netball, Hockey and Football teams and it was awesome to have students in winning teams across the two days. There was again excellent feedback about the sportsmanship and appropriate competitiveness that the games were played in.
Friday is Footy Colours Day at Lilydale. It is a great way to finish the term, even if your team isn’t playing Saturday. Please support this cause and encourage students to wear something that has their favourite teams colours in it, be it a beanie, a shirt or jumper. Enjoy the day and have some fun.
Kira Trethewie, our School Business Manager, is moving on to an Acting Position at Invermay Primary School for Term 4 of this year and Term 1 in 2022. Kira has been an outstanding member of our office team and also a key member of our leadership team. We are really pleased that this opportunity has arisen for Kira and wish her all the best as she continues her employment journey with the Department of Education. Ms Annette Strickland will be joining us from Bracknell Primary School as Kira’s replacement. Annette comes with many years of experience with the DoE and is looking forward to the opportunities that come from working in a bigger organisation.
In other positive news we are welcoming back Mrs Alana Lava to the Lil-2 Sector. We are disappointed that Alana’s promoted opportunity was cut short but delighted to have her back on staff leading her team again. I know all the students, and staff, will be happy to have a familiar face assisting them with their learning directly and indirectly during Term 4.
We are all looking forward to the holidays so that we can refresh and reset ourselves for a term which is always very busy but rewarding. Please stay safe, relax and enjoy the break.
Colin Pearson – Principal
Term 3 finishes this Friday, 24 September
Term 4 will commence on Monday, 11 October and the last day for students for 2021 will be Thursday, 16 December.
During Term 4 we have a K-10 Professional Learning Day on Friday, 29 October, this is prior to the Recreation Day Public Holiday on the following Monday, 1 November. Students are not required to attend school on either of these days. Staff, however will be participating in professional learning on the Friday 29 October.
On Monday, 13 September a representative from the University of Tasmania (UTAS) came and gave a presentation about what students can expect if they choose to go to university. She explained what courses can be studied at UTAS, what life is like on campus and all the different support networks there are for students.
All high school students had the opportunity to view the presentation and ask questions. While it might still seem like a long way off to start thinking about university, it is beneficial for the students to start thinking about their pathways now and learn about all the opportunities out there.
Centrelink School Leavers Resource eKit Available Now!
Services Australia has a range of payments and services to help students after secondary school. Whether they choose to pursue further study, training, an apprenticeship or are looking for work, there is support available.
Students finishing Year 12 can get prepared for next year now. They can create a myGov account, get their own Medicare card and use the Payment and Service Finder to see what payments they may get. They can apply for a student payment up to 13 weeks before their uni or TAFE course starts.
To help your school leavers be prepared, you can download the updated School Leavers Resource eKit. It contains many different resources that explain Centrelink payments, like Youth Allowance and ABSTUDY, and how to get started with myGov. It also has information to help students get their own Medicare card and proof of COVID-19 vaccinations.
We encourage you to:
- Download the School Leavers eKit for education and training providers
- Read more about how you can help students learn about Centrelink payments

In the week beginning 6September, Lilydale School hosted some Friesian calves as a part of the Cows Create Careers program. Year 11-13 students provided the care for the calves with Years 3 to 8 students helping with them. Daily care included feeding, mucking out their bed and providing them with muesli and fresh water. The two calves were four weeks old and two feeds of two and a half litres of milk each day (so five litres a day in total) and they were still very hungry. Thank you to Mr R Arnold for supplying the calves for this program.

Covid Update - Check In Tas App
Following on from a direction from the Tasmanian Government, we now have some changed arrangements in place for parents and carers when visiting schools.
You will now need to check in using the Check-in TAS app when entering school buildings; this includes classrooms, the office or the canteen.
Students are also NOT required to check-in, these arrangements only apply to adults.
We have posters displayed in and around the school site with the QR code to use for checking in.
For those who do not have a smart phone and need to manually check-in, please come to the school office for assistance.
We appreciate your support in ensuring we are doing the right thing.

School Banking is a great way to practice regular savings
Remember, Thursday is School Banking day and students can bring in their weekly deposit.
Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you're saving a little or a lot. Remember, there is no minimum deposit with School Banking, you can send as little as 5c per week in, saving regularly is what is important.
For every deposit made at school, students will receive a Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a School Banking reward item.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives a Regular Savers Contribution of $5 for every 10 deposits processed per student as well as an Annual Contribution which is based on the number of students who made at least one School Banking deposit in the prior year.
If your child has lost their book, please contact your School Banking Co-ordinator for a replacement or visit any Commonwealth Bank branch.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at <school name>. We would also like to thank the wonderful parents who volunteer as our School Banking Co-ordinators and process our banking every week.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2021 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the Commonwealth Bank School Banking website.
